What to bring checklist
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What should I be packing for my camp?
A: Wilderness Escape Outdoor Adventures (WEOA) has a 25+ year history of successfully running outdoor camps and has designed an effective “What to Bring” packing list that has evolved over time. This time-tested gear list is available at the top of this page to download as a checklist on our camp registration webpage and has everything you would need to bring for your camp. Please refer to the list and make sure to tick it off as you pack for your trip. This list also gives you an idea of what we will be providing you, which you do not have to bring e.g. tents, tarps, stoves, sleeping mats, compasses etc.
Q: Can I bring my own gear e.g. backpack, Thermarest air mattress etc?
A:WEOA and has an excellent inventory of camp gear that is supplied to everyone on the camp. This is gear that is designed to be rugged and strong. The cost of purchasing any of this gear for personal use can be prohibitive and you also run the risk of damaging your own gear. Hence it would be preferable to use the gear that we provide on camp. You are still welcome to bring your own gear and get it inspected and cleared by our instructors for use.
Q: Can my child bring a camera? Why not?
A: Phones and any electronic gadgets are not allowed on camps and will be confiscated for the following reasons:
Q: What is a Dilly bag?
A: A dilly bag is a cloth draw string bag preferably made of cotton because it breathes and allows your gear to stay dry without going mouldy. The drawstring stops dust and bugs getting in and allows the bag to be hung up in the fresh air as well as stopping the plate, bowl, cup, cutlery and tea towel inside from falling out! All the contents should be made of strong material melamine to avoid breakage and should be CLEARLY LABELLED.
Q: Where can I buy a head torch?
A: Head torches can be easily found in all outdoor stores and some shopping chains like Kmart
Q: What are aquatic shoes?
A: Aquatic shoes are lightweight closed-toe shoes that can be used for water-based activities like kayaking, sailing, fishing, beach activities etc. Old running sneakers can also be used instead.
FOOD - WHAT TO BRING
Q: Where do you buy water bladders from?
A: Spring water bladders from the supermarket are the best, cheapest & lightest way to carry extra water required for the expedition. Here's what one looks like. There are both 5 litre and 10 Litre options.
Q: My child cannot eat some foods. Will they be catered for accordingly?
A: As long as we have received information regarding your child’s dietary needs when registering online, we will be able to provide the correct food during the program.
Q: Will there be nuts on camp?
A: All WEOA camps have a strict nut free policy. We do not cater any foods that contain nuts. We also inform all school staff & students attending camp that nuts & nut products are banned. Suggestions for alternatives are also provided.
Q: Where can I find the camp menu?
A: The camp menu is on top of this page as link for you to view and / or print.
Q: What if my child does not like the food being provided?
A: Provided we are given the information on a participant’s dietary needs, we will always endeavour to provide meal options to suit each participant.
Q: Can my child bring meat on the expedition?
A: Yes, provided it is a long life meat alternative that does not require refrigeration.
Q: Will there be refrigeration provided for my child’s food?
A: No fridges, or eskies will be available for participants to use. All expedition/camp food provided needs to belong life/non perishable where possible. Participants are recommended to transport food in esky bags or similar to help prolong the life of the food brought.
Note: If this program has an expedition component where students will be cooking their meals on a Trangia stove, there will be a Student Expedition Meal Planner booklet for download at the top of this page. This document will also have food expectations and suggestions.
Q: Is the day 1 lunch catered for?
A: All staff & participants are expected to provide day 1recess, & lunch. All other meals will either be self catered or catered for by WEOA at the base camp, depending on the camp design. Refer to the Camp Menu that is provided at the top of this page to view & print.
Q: My child needs to snack regularly. Will they be able to do this?
A: Yes. We allow breaks for breakfast, lunch & dinner, as well as morning & afternoon tea. Students may also choose to provide extra snacks to consume at other times. WEOA staff can always make exceptions to allow time for this.
Q: What if my child’s cooking partner does not like the same food as my child?
A: To make the self catering as easy as possible for participants, we encourage participants to partner with someone who has similar tastes. If this isn’t an option, we also encourage cooking partners to come up with a meal(s) that suite both parties. Alternatively, they can always cook at different times or separately if time & equipment allows.
Q: Can my child heat up their expedition/day 1 lunch?
A: No catering facilities are provided for day 1 lunches to be heated or prepared. Most locations & program timings do not allow for this. Expedition lunches are also to be eaten cold as there isn’t enough time for all participants to setup & use the Trangia stoves to do so.
Q: Who will be cooking the base camp meals?
A: Certain base camp programs will have a specialist WEOA cook providing all catering during the program. For all other programs WEOA cater for, staff trained in Food Safety Systems will be preparing meals with the help of staff & students where possible.
Q: Can my child bring frozen meal(s) for their expedition?
A: No, this is not recommended. In some instances, participants may not be preparing/cooking their meals until the second or third night on camp. We also cannot predict when the frozen food may defrost & start to become unsafe to consume.
Q: It says there is no refrigeration provided, so how can my child bring fresh fruit & vegetables?
A: We recommend fresh fruit & vegetables to be part of all meals, even during an expedition. Certain fruits & vegetables have a longer life span & are better suited for expedition meals.
Note: If this program has an expedition component where students will be cooking their meals on a Trangia stove, there will be an Student Expedition Meal Planner booklet for download at the top of this page. This document will also have food expectations and suggestions.
Q: During the expedition, will there be eskies / fridges provided for my child’s medication?
A: WEOA do not normally provide eskies / refrigeration during expeditions. However we can make special arrangements to ensure certain medications can be kept at their optimal temperature. Please speak with the school camp coordinator to discuss options for this.
During the duration of the camp an All Hours Contact (AHC) person from the school will be available to be contacted if the need arises.
In the case of an emergency or incident whilst the camp is in progress, WEOA staff will follow a strict communication protocol. The WEOA AHC will make contact with the School/College AHC to pass on information to parents.
Please direct all communication to this key school staff contact via the following phone numbers:
School AHC Marcel Rijken
During office hours via the School Office: 8405 0900
After hours please contact: 0407 799 262
EVACUATIONS: It may be necessary to require parents/caregivers to collect their child from camp under the following circumstances:
*PLEASE NOTE: A parent / caregiver (or trusted other) must be available to collect their child for the duration of the program. If this cannot be guaranteed then your child cannot attend.
IMPORTANT: Please do not allow your child to bring electronic items, especially mobile phones, to camp. WEOA has approved communication pathways between the Program Management, the School, and groups in the field. We utilise the best possible communication systems to ensure any incident is effectively managed. To prevent any mixed communications, confusion or double messages which could impact on the safety of groups in the field, it is vitally important that the approved communication pathways are the only means used. Should you need to contact your child whilst on camp, please refer to the All Hours Contact (AHC) details listed above.
To achieve the program outcomes, this camp has been designed with the school to provide a level of challenge suitable for the age group and ability level of the students on average attending the camp.
