Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze or Silver Award Practice or Qualifying Journey package
This package of the Practice or Qualifying Journey will take place during the October school holidays in the Mt Lofty Ranges, with a pre-requisite planning session to occur on the 29th of September, between 9-3.30pm, in Glynde.
The journey includes a 2 hour pre-trip planning session, all instruction, maps and compasses, a backpack, stove, fuel, tent, sleeping mat, raincoat, transport and highly experienced and accredited bushwalking supervisors for the journey.
During the planning and preparation session, our experienced and accredited instructors will help you develop the skills necessary to complete your Practice or Qualifying Journey. The session will provide you with an introduction to minimal impact camping, basic navigation training, menu, equipment and route planning, as well as an introduction to risk management throughout your Adventurous Journey. The planning session is required by all Duke of Edinburgh participants wishing to achieve their Bronze or Silver Award. Differentiation and expectations will vary relative to bronze or silver awardees.
The Adventurous Journey is scheduled for Wednesday the 9th to Friday the 11th of October. This three day journey will occur in the Mt Lofty Ranges area with the route being established during the planning session. There will be a minimum of one experienced and accredited instructor with each group of up to seven participants as well as an assessor for the Qualifying Journey. There will also be a debrief session upon completion of the Qualifying Journey.
We are pleased to be an accredited Adventurous Journey provider for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program.

The programs we conduct have been designed to provide a level of mental and physical challenge to participants. With all activities come specific hazards as well as general hazards which need to be noted.
Wilderness Escape programs are held outdoors throughout many different areas of South Australia’s wilderness. While our staff minimise each activity's risk there are some variables which are out of our control such as the environment and weather. Participants need to be aware the planned activities will still run during weather which may not be ideal e.g. heat, cold, wind, or rain although activities do have contingencies for extreme weather. While the weather or conditions may not be ideal during the program, this is a part of the overall experience and will help participants build resilience through stretching comfort zones.
For more information regarding risk management strategies visit our website: http://www.wildernessescape.com.au
If you require any further information about the camp program please feel free to make contact with the staff at WEOA during office hours on 8165 2022
All Wilderness Escape staff members have a minimum of Senior First Aid training, whilst support staff hold an upgraded skillset which includes Remote Area First Aid. All staff will carry a comprehensive Group First Aid kit during the activities during the program. If you feel that additional information should be supplied regarding your child's medical or psychological history then please upload/return it as a medical action/care plan.
Before the program, ensure your child’s medical information form is completed online so that staff are aware of any medication they may be taking. Please make sure any medication required is noted on the medical form indicating the condition under which it is to be taken, and participants bring it with them. For example, Epipens or Ventolin must accompany them at all times. This includes medication that may be taken infrequently and over the counter medication (such as Panadol for headaches or Nurofen for migraines). WEOA staff are not able to supply medications to a participant unless it is noted on the medical form.
*PLEASE NOTE: In the case of medical conditions, such as asthma, allergies, anaphylaxis, diabetes or epilepsy, any existing management plan and emergency plan signed by a GP or specialist must be attached/uploaded at the time of registration (please make sure it is legible). This also applies to any medication your child may be taking for any or these conditions. If you are unsure about your child’s ability to participate in the activities based on their medical conditions then please consult your family physician.
